About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The title of the project is Integrated Safety and Security Design for Autonomous Systems Against Cyber-Physical Attacks.

For a doctoral position, the objective is a complete doctoral training until obtaining a doctorate.

Technological renewal has led to unprecedented connectivity, resulting in a colossal number of autonomous systems with sensing, computing and communication capabilities linked to the network and operating online. In circumstances where security concerns and security issues have become deeply intertwined, new defense systems are urgently needed. An attack not only exploits the virtual cyberworld, but can also manipulate security-critical devices to cause real damage in the physical world. This type of cybersecurity problem has moved beyond the scope of ICT technologies and there is a need to provide control-level security warnings and stability guarantees when attackers have penetrated the network and intercepted the data transmitted through the network.

The Ph.D. consists of studying concepts, methods and tools for new approaches to the design and implementation of detection and resilient control against attacks in cyber-physical systems. More specifically, the goal is to explore what can be done by:

  1. Characterize different types of attacks and represent typical attacks in a unified form
  2. Determine the Status of Stealth Integrity Attacks in Closed-Loop Systems
  3. Design auxiliary diagnostic systems against various typical integrity attacks
  4. Attack-resistant control of autonomous cyber-physical systems.

To achieve this, patterns in the colossal amount of data generated from autonomous systems must be identified.

Job duties

Selection criteria required

  • you must have relevant professional experience in reliability, availability, maintainability and security, or cybernetics, or information and communications technology, or similar
  • your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian study programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level
  • you must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the Master’s program, or an equivalent background, equal to or better than B on the NTNU grading scale. If you don’t have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker educational background, you can be assessed if you can prove that you are particularly suitable for doctoral training.
  • you must meet the conditions for admission to the doctoral program of the faculty
  • knowledge about machine learning and a strong desire to learn more
  • good written and oral English

The appointment must be made in accordance with the regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred Selection Criteria

  • familiar with Python and MATLAB programming, SIMULINK
  • familiar with mathematical modeling methods, modern control theory and observer theory, signal processing and typical data-driven approaches
  • good knowledge and experience in project management and programming
  • strong skill in data-driven modeling and anomaly detection

We offer

As a doctoral student (code 1017) you are normally paid from NOK 491,200 gross per year before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian civil service pension fund.

The term of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a doctoral position requires that you be admitted to the doctoral program in engineering within three months of your employment and that you participate in an organized doctoral program during the period of employment.

The engagement must be carried out in accordance with the regulations in force concerning employees and civil servants of the State and the laws relating to the control of the export of strategic goods, services and technologies.
