In 2013, Washoe County embarked on a $ 2.6 million renovation project to turn an existing single-building park (which was often mistaken for a fire station) into a destination that members of the community of all ages will be able to discover for centuries to come.
The design team, working closely with county commissioners and the community at large, wanted to develop a theme that best represented the area, ultimately selecting an aeronautical theme that played on the proximity to Reno Airport. Stead and the aeronautical history of the region. Features of the park include copies of Stead Airport, including the aerial tower and runway. Numerous miniature planes reminiscent of air races populate the landscape.
The park has been designed to minimize water loss and maximize water reuse, and is rated to allow water to flow into a common point through a filtration system and into a pumping station, where it is UV treated and recycled in the park. It also includes decorative safety / windshield fencing, landscaping, shade canopies, signage and site furnishings, as well as soft siding with graphics of Lake Tahoe and airplanes.
